Milk Unit JKMPCL’s Effluent Flows Fatal for Aquatic Creatures, Surrounding Environment
Toxic wastewater from milk unit causing death of fishes in Royal Spring Golf Course’s pond, polluting dal lake
Srinagar 10 Aug (CNS): An effluent emanating from a milk unit operating under the name of Jammu & Kashmir Milk Producers’ Cooperative Limited (JKMPCL), which produces Snowcap and Amul milk, in Cheshmashahi Srinagar has been allegedly inflicting damage to the surrounding environment, especially killing fishes in the Royal Spring Golf Course Cheshmashahi and polluting the Dal Lake.
Reliable sources told the news agency CNS that the wastewater from the JKMPCL has severely impacted the fragile environment around the dairy unit after an increase in effluent generation owing to a substantial uptick in milk production in a day.
“The untreated wastewater, continuing to seep into the Royal Spring Golf Course, has killed a number of fishes in its pond and has been disturbing a habitat for migratory birds inside the golf course. The foul smell from the dairy unit’s effluent is becoming a nuisance for VVIPs visiting the course,” they said.
One of the documents dated 29-08-2022 accessed by the CNS also corroborated the claims of sources and revealed the JKMPCL’s acknowledgment of the issue and attributing the cause to a damage in drainage pipe carrying off the wastewater.
The dairy unit, via the document, also informs to the Royal Spring Golf Course’s authority back then of repairing the pipe and discharging all wastewater into the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) besides agreeing to expand and upgrading the ETP, with proper adherence to the norms of the J&K Pollution Control Board (JKPCB).
Not polluting only the golf course and adjacent areas, sources said that the wastewater from the dairy unit ultimately flows into the Dal Lake and must be wreaking unthinkable damage to the aquatic life inside the world famous lake.
“Till date the milk unit has failed to upgrade its ETP despite availing a massive subsidy. On a couple of occasions, when the Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) (then LAWDA) department tried to inspect the diary unit after receiving complaints, a team from LCMA was stopped from entering the unit’s premises,” sources said.
Visuals captured by the CNS of the wastewater generated from the milk unit showed a whitish layer accumulating over an effluent, lying stagnant at some distance from the dairy unit.
While talking to an Environmentalist regarding the impact of dairy effluent, he said that dairy wastewater is a rich nutrient liquid waste, which causes eutrophication of water and results in formation of bacteria and algae. “These bacteria and algae absorb oxygen in the water and become a reason for the mass death of fishes and other creatures,” he added.
Amul, one of the milk brands, being packaged along with Snowcap at the JKMPCL regarding whom was learnt that there it has not any registration with the Registrar Cooperative Societies Jammu and Kashmir.
As the deteriorating effects of the effluents from JKMPCL are already being endured by the adjacent fragile environment, the operation of the milk unit by flouting norms speaks volumes. (CNS)
